We are delighted that Dr. Neil Shah, Daniel's Consultant at Great Ormond Street Hospital, has agreed to be the patron and medical advisor to our Charity
I have been involved and working at Great Ormond Street Hospital since 1997. I have been a consultant for the last four years as a Paediatric Gastroenterologist. I am honoured to be asked to be a Patron and medical advisor of Making it Better - the Daniel Courtney Trust. I was the consultant in charge of Daniel Courtney from the very first few days of his life.
I have had a very long-standing interest in Microvillous Atrophy. I first encountered this condition as a junior doctor and also whilst undertaking research. This research, kindly sponsored by Action Medical Research, looked at the genetic causes of Microvillous Atrophy, with the aim of finding a future cure.
A great deal has been done but a great deal still needs to be done in this devastating condition. I am sure that with support, gene therapy as a cure is a very real possibility.
